AI & Automation

AI is valuable when it solves a real business problem.

I filed my first machine learning patent in 2005 - nearly 20 years before ChatGPT. AI isn't magic. It's engineering. And it's only valuable when it solves a real problem.

AI has been my toolkit for a long time.

Before "AI" became a marketing term, I was building speech recognition systems, natural language processing pipelines, and neural network applications for enterprise clients. TensorFlow, PyTorch, statistical NLP -- these aren't new to me.

The question I ask before any AI project isn't "how can I use AI here?" It's "is AI the right tool for this problem?" Sometimes it is. Sometimes a well-designed automation or a better database query accomplishes the same outcome at a fraction of the cost.

When AI genuinely fits, I build it properly: production-grade, integrated with your existing systems, and maintainable by your team.

"I've been building intelligent systems for years. AI isn't magic. It's engineering. And it's only valuable when it solves a real problem."

AI before it was called AI

My first patent - filed in 2005 - used machine learning to identify a person based on the timing patterns between phonemes in their voice. Not frequency analysis. Not voiceprints. The system analyzed how you speak, measuring the reproducible temporal spacing between speech sounds to confirm identity.

That was nearly 20 years before ChatGPT. I've been engineering intelligent systems since before most people had heard the term "machine learning."

U.S. Patent #20070033041 - Method of identifying a person based upon voice analysis (2005)

Technology I work with

TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenAI API, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Hugging Face, n8n, Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL with pgvector, Pinecone, Chroma, Azure AI, AWS Bedrock

Three categories of AI work.

Most AI engagements fall into one of these categories. The right approach depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish.

LLM Applications and AI Agents

Custom applications built on large language models. This includes AI agents that can take action, RAG systems that give your AI access to your private data, multi-step reasoning pipelines, and LLM-powered tools embedded in your existing workflows.

Business Process Automation

Automated workflows using n8n, Python scripts, and API integrations that eliminate manual steps, reduce errors, and let your team focus on work that actually requires human judgment. This includes intelligent document processing, data extraction, and AI-assisted communications.

Speech Recognition and NLP

Custom speech-to-text systems, call transcription and analysis, natural language processing for business data, and voice-driven interfaces. I've been building these systems since before the current AI wave and understand the engineering challenges that generic APIs don't solve.

What I can help with.

If your problem involves any of these areas, I can help. If it doesn't fit neatly in a box, bring it anyway.

LLM application development (OpenAI, Anthropic, open-source models)
RAG systems and private knowledge bases
AI agents with tool use and real-world actions
Workflow automation with n8n and Python
Speech recognition and call transcription
Natural language processing pipelines
Intelligent document processing and extraction
AI-assisted communications and response generation
API-driven automation and system integration
Neural network design and training (TensorFlow, PyTorch)
AI integration with existing business systems
Chatbots and conversational AI (with real integrations)

How it works.

I don't start with a technology choice. I start with your problem.

1

Tell me the problem

Not the technology you think you need. The actual business problem. What's slow, what's breaking, what's costing time or money. I'll ask the right questions from there.

2

We agree on what "solved" means

Before I start, we define success. What will the system do, how will you know it's working, and what does completion look like. This is the Jeff Norton Guarantee in action.

3

I go to work

I engineer the solution, integrate it with your existing systems, and make sure it actually works in production -- not just in a demo. I communicate clearly throughout and don't disappear.

Have an AI or automation problem?

Tell me what you're trying to accomplish. I'll tell you honestly whether AI is the right tool, what it would take to build it, and what it would cost. No hype. No sales pitch.
